Day
1 -Welcome to New England
New England is the perfect get-away during the legendary fall season. Lovely villages nestle among rolling hills, farmhouses sit amidst ripening fields, country dooryards are ablaze with decorations of the season, orchards of shiny red apples wait to be pressed into cider. It’s pumpkin and Indian corn time, and the season when New England craftspeople are their busiest preparing for the season.
Arrive at your leisure into Boston’s Logan Airport. Our downtown hotel is conveniently located within a 5-minute walk of the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, and the waterfront. This evening you’ll attend an informal Welcome Meeting, conveniently scheduled for early evening on this first day. You’ll meet your traveling companions who’ve come from all the world to share a week of friendship and fun. You’ll also meet Country Heritage Tours’ friendly and knowledgeable tour director, your personal guide for the entire week.
Day 2 - Grandmas & Grand Quilts
We’ll travel north today to Lowell, Massachusetts to visit a turn-of-the-century bank building that is now home to the New England Quilt Museum. One of the few quilt museums in the country, the museum’s permanent collection presents the finest of New England’s historical and contemporary quilting.
Later, our journey through picturesque New England continues as we travel into the woodsy countryside of New Hampshire. Over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house we go...to visit a 200 year-old shingled cottage surrounded by country gardens. When we peek inside one room of this dwelling we see the Big Bad Wolf peering from under the bed quilt, for this is the original artist’s setting for the 1948 Golden Book version of Little Red Riding Hood. Venturing further into the cottage, we discover a cozy room where bittersweet embellishes the fireplace and wooden tables, and a “lunch of the season” has been readied for us.
Following lunch, you’ll want to step outside where a magic world awaits you in the Culinary, Fragrance, and Witches Gardens. And tucked along the winding garden path is a greenhouse filled with herbs and plants, and a thatched cottage brimming with gifts of potpourri and country spices. We’ll check into our nearby hotel, where sleep may not come easy as we anticipate an exciting day tomorrow that includes a visit to the Keepsake Quilt Shop. (Lunch)
Day 3 - Keepsake Treasure & Shaker Pleasure
This morning we journey through hill and dale to a pristine hilltop village, once home to over 250 Shakers. Time seems to have stood still in this peaceful, white-washed village where our guide will evoke 1800’s village life, sharing stories learned from Shaker Sisters. Afterward, you’ll have an opportunity to visit with village craftspeople who still produce Shaker crafts.
Later, we know you’ll be ready to be whisked off to America’s largest quilt shop...Keepsake Quilts. Once inside this needlework and quilt paradise, you’ll be dazzled by the hundreds of quilts suspended from the ceiling and walls, the 8000 bolts of fabrics, the hundreds of books, and mountain of needlework supplies... This evening you can unpack and relax at our Vermont hotel for the next two nights. (C Breakfast) (Dinner)
Day 4 - Vermont's Smithsonian
Today we’ll visit a quiet corner of Vermont where, nestled near Lake Champlain, one of this country’s best kept secrets awaits...the extraordinary Shelburne Museum. You’ll explore yesterday’s New England in this park-like setting, following meandering pathways through perennial gardens and over covered bridges. Inside dozens of vintage buildings you’ll find art by Rembrandt, Monet,Wyeth, Degas, Grandma Moses; a collection of rare needlework pieces; dolls and dollhouses; cigar store figures...and the largest collection of early American quilts in the world! Day 5 - Mountain to Sea
Sit back and delight in the scenery as our coach wends its way through the New England countryside. Our journey takes us from the foothills of the Green Mountains to the charming turn-of-the-century town of Woodstock, Vermont. Sample lunch at one of the many charming cafes, or browse the unique shops showcasing antique linens and laces, quilts, and native Vermont pottery.
Afternoon finds us checking into our hotel in Ogunquit, Maine, where the spectacular beauty of the sea is a focal point from anywhere on the grounds. And be sure to bring your bathing suit and enjoy the hotel’s indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, sauna, whirlpool, all overlooking the ocean. (C. Breakfast)
Day 6 - The Magic of Maine
Imagine awakening to the sounds of the sea, whose spectacular beauty is just a few steps from our door! This morning we’ll be visiting Knight’s Quilt Shop where a “Private Sale” has been arranged just us!
We’ll return to our sea-side hotel in Ogunquit later today where you’ll want to explore this cozy, turn-of-the-century village whose streets are lined with white clapboard cottages and picket fences. Enjoy the gentle ocean breezes and the fragrance of beach roses and filled window- boxes. Whether you choose to see the village by trolley or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the ocean side cliff-walk, be sure to visit Perkins cove, tucked away in the harbor area with wharf-side cafes and artisan shops.
This evening savor the unforgettable taste of our lobster bake farewell-dinner, it’s heaven! (C. Breakfast) (Dinner)
Day 7 - Boston!
This morning
we'll tour Boston where our coach will traverse the old, narrow streets,
taking you to historic places like the Old North Church,
the U.S.S. Constitution, the Boston Massacre
site, the Tea Party Ship... and maybe a peek
at the famous Brinks Robbery building!
Later we’ll
visit Faneuil Hall Marketplace, where international food
stalls and pushcarts piled high with wares fill the old riverfront area.
Our journey
together ends as we arrive at Boston’s airport, and then back to
our starting hotel for guests staying additional time. (C. Breakfast) |
