Day 1

Arrive in Beijing and meet out local guide for transfer to our beautiful downtown hotel.  There is time to relax and freshen up before meeting your travel companions and Tour Manager at our Welcome Dinner. D

Day 2

After breakfast – included daily – we’ll begin our day at Beijing’s Temple of Heaven, where emperors prayed and locals now practice tai chi. Visiting a Pearl workshop we’ll learn about China’s long legacy crafting freshwater pearl jewelry, then enjoy lunch together. Following a stop at Tian’anmen Square, scene of 1989 protests, we’ll explore the Forbidden City, a 9,000-room maze of 15th-century palaces. Dinner features Peking Duck, and a cultural show. B, L, D

Day 3

Today we climb China’s best-known icon, the Great Wall, begun in the seventh century BC and so vast it’s visible from the moon. After lunch we’ll shop for jade, revered by Chinese for over 5,000 years. Returning to Beijing we’ll see the National Stadium, a 2008 Summer Olympics venue. B, L

Day 4

Beijing – Xian

Exploring Hongqiao Market, popular for their “brand lookalikes”.  You’ll discover a colorful marketplace brimming with clothes, jewelry and shoes, where you can practice your bargaining skills with local merchants in a fun atmosphere. After flying to Xian, we’ll gather for a wine reception. B

Day 5

An early start avoids crowds at Xian’s famed Terra Cotta Warriors, the underground army of 6,000 life-sized pottery warriors and horses — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After lunch, local women will teach us Luochuan patchwork and Shanxi traditional needlework. This evening’s Tang Dynasty Dinner Show includes a song and dance performance. B, L, D

Day 6

Xian – Shanghai – Suzhou

Driving to the airport, we’ll see the Xi’an City Wall, the most complete and intact in China, and among the world’s largest ancient defenses. In Shanghai, we’ll meet our local guide and drive to Suzhou, South China’s Garden City. B, D

Day 7

Our day begins in the Couple’s Garden, an enchanting landscape of water, pavilions, trees and flowers, another UNESCO site. Cruising the Pingjiang River on a local boat we’ll see traditional white house with black tiles — Pingjiang Road was Suzhou’s ancient main street and its small canals, characteristic shops and tea-houses have barely changed in 800 years. Following lunch we’ll visit Suzhou No 1 Silk Factory to learn the process from silkworm to fabric. At the Suzhou Embroidery Institute over 100 artists create China’s finest silk embroideries for diplomatic gifts and serious collectors. Tonight, explore the night market with our guide. B, L

Day 8

Suzhou – Tongxiang – Shanghai

In Tongxiang we’ll visit the Dyeing Workshop to watch them create the blue-and-white dyed cloth that’s been made here for over a millennium then buy it from the workshop. After lunch we’ll visit Cultural Revolution Hall, where locals gathered during that chaotic 1960’s decade. Returning to Shanghai, we’ll savor a dumpling dinner. B, L

Day 9

The serene Jade Buddha Temple, in magnificent Song Dynasty architectural style, begins our action-packed day. Next is Shanghai’s famous Bund, and before lunch in the beautiful French Concessions neighborhood, we’ll go through Shanghai’s Ghetto, where 23,000 Jewish refugees spent the Japanese occupation of 1943—1945. South Bund Fabric Market, which we’ll tour this afternoon, is three floors of clothing, fabric and tailors. B, L

Day 10

It’s hands-on at our Chinese knotting and embroidery class, where we’ll learn this intricate craft using silk cords.  After, visit Shanghai’s 400-year-old Yu Garden and the most beautiful south of the Yangtze, with dragon walls, winding paths and flowers. Next we’ll explore atmospheric Taikang Road, a labyrinth of alleyways, small craft stores and art studios whose antique walls, tiles and traditional exteriors hide modern restaurants, boutiques and cafes. After our  Farewell Dinner we’ll enjoy fabulous night views of Shanghai from a Huangpu River cruise. B, D

Day 11

There’s time for last-minute shopping before transferring to the airport for your home bound flight. B
